    Talon on 185VS Question

    I have a new to me 2003 185VS with a carbureted 150 Yamaha V-Max on the back.
Wanting to put 2-12 foot Minnkota Talons on the back mounted to a 8 inch jack plate.
Anyone else have this setup and if so, having any issues. Called Ranger and they are telling me that I may have issues with purposing and sucking water back thru the Exhaust on this older boat.
They are telling me to put 150 pounds of dead weight in the splash well, load the live wells up water, fill up the gas tank along with 2 people in the boat and see what it does.,
If someone has something similar, please let me know.

    Thanks
    John

Personal experience with a similar setup will be your best guide here, John, as you suggest, but the laws of physics do seem stacked against what you propose to do. 150 pounds of dead weight hanging off the back of a 185 or 188, powered by a 150, is definitely going to impact performance. The question is, to what extent, and would that impact be a deal-breaker for you? The talons are somewhat heavy, the jack plate weighs something too, and the fulcrum effect is more pronounced in shorter boats than, say, a 20 or 21 footer. In addition, as Ranger has implied in their response, "sinking" the stern of the boat can cause more drag, possible backwash, and (noted) possible porpoising. But...everyone loads his boat differently, so maybe it could work out! For your sake, I hope someone comes on here and tells us that two Talons plus a jack plate is no problem on a 185.

If concerned with weight consider Power Poles instead pair of 10 foot blades w braced brackets only @75 pounds on the transom.

Go with power poles they are lighter. Had talons it will weigh your backend down. Loved the talons but heavy.

I have a 03 185DVS with Merc 150 Opti and I'm running two 8' Power poles. My top end is down 2-3 mph and the back splash on to my deck after coming off plan is insane. I love my poles but I've been debating getting rid of them.

Tilt your motor all the way down when coming off of plane and slowly reduce speed instead of a sudden stop. It will help with back splashing onto your rear back deck.

Zachmeredith, does it have any issues with Porpoising at low speed.
I think i can control the deck wash as wilds described below.

At this point, i am considering going to power poles or neither.

are you running braced brackets if so remove your braces and try it, they are not necessary for 8 foot blades.

I have one 12ft Talon with mounts on my z118 with 150 Pro xs and I can feel it's back there. It took me a few weeks of testing to maximize the weight. My top speed is close to what it was without it but my hole shot suffered a little. I still need to try a smaller prop. I wouldn't go 2 talons just too heavy for theses smaller 18ft class boats.
