    ProXS hours???

Looking at buying a boat with 659 hours on a 2008 ProXS. 80% of these hours are below 2k rpms and about 5% above 5k rpms. Motor has yearly service records. Would you hesitate on pulling the trigger? Boat and motor look to have been very well taken care off.

Not even a little bit. Especially with the service records.

If it's been well maintained I wouldn't worry about it. Honestly, I think it's better to buy a well maintained motor that has been ran and used than to buy a 9 year old motor with just 50 hrs on it.

Yea it's up north and fishes a lot of bays and small lakes so I guess no need to really run much.

Side imaging has had a significant impact on hours on motors over the last eight years

I just agreed to purchase a two year old boat with 170 on it and it seemed like a ton to me. A usual busy year of fishing for me is 50 hours. So I did a little research and a lot of saltwater guys were quoting 4000 hr life for this engine with proper maintainence.

Not sure how accurate that is but those guys run them a lot harder than the typical fresh water guy does.

I would want compression check with that many hours.

A hard 4000 hrs is better on a motor than an idling around for 600. They need to be ran into their optimum rpm range. Idling builds up carbon and carbon is pretty much diamonds in a motor.

Engine print out with all alarm codes. Compression & leak down test. Should be no problem.

I had a 2008 Opti 225. Getting the steel reefs replaced with carbon fiber wasn’t cheap. With that many hours the injectors should have been cleaned and flow tested. If all that kind of maintenance including trailer maintenance has been done it should fetch top dollar. It’s still a ten model year old boat and you should budget accordingly.

Up here in Ontario where a large portion of are fishing is in cooler weather and in cooler water those optimax motors in the larger hp range don't last more the 250-300 hours tops without blowing up. Doesn't really matter what brand, if it's a 225 or 250 they just don't last. If the boat is in great shape I would definitely budget in the cost of a power head or lower unit. If the motor needs high dollar repairs they're more then likely will cost more then what the outboard is worth. You have to keep that in mind. I wouldnt hesitate to purchase a well cared for used boat/ motor if it was the right price but I would definitely negotiate the price significantly to cover repairs that are definitely going to occur because of the age and hours on the outboard.

I'm fine with the total hours but all that idling would scare me. I have alot of idle hours because my home lake is mostly all idle.

I was looking at a boat with a 3 year old 225 pro xs with just over 600hrs and A LOT of lower rpm hours. I called a couple merc mechanic shops to get their opinions and the general consensus was that it would be looking at a powerhead soon. I really liked that boat, but passed anyways. Maybe post this question in the merc engine forum for better opinions. good luck!

No motor, any brand, would I be buying on credit without a warranty.

Not saying you are, don’t know anything about you and talking in general.

A perfectly good engine can have issues tomorrow, and put you up side down in a purchase real fast.

If your getting a great deal, buying the boat knowing you can repower if need be, go for it!!!!

That is one reason I decided to go with with DFI oil this time.

Too much idle time has it's own problems too, carbon buildup. Easy to take care of. I would pull the trigger on it.
