Question Houghton Lake?? Going for a week in Oct.

Buddy and I are heading up to Houghton Lake for the first time ever, for 5 days of fishing in early Oct. What should we look for? Big smallies up there? Map looks like its mostly a shallow lake with few deep spots. What is the water clarity? Any hazards to look out for on all those shallow flats?? Any help would be appreciated.

    THANKS!

Houghton is not known for the fishing. There are a lot of other lakes in the area that are better. St. Helen is right next door. Cadillac Mitchel is a few hops away. The titty chain is pretty good. Sugar Springs isn't too far either.

If you are set on that lake, find weed lines adjacent to drops. That should get you started until you hone in on them. Top water has been really good this year on all of the lakes. Let us know how you do.

Houghton isn't terrible, but the surrounding lakes are sooo much better.

Houghton lake is a fish producing machine but it gets alot of pressure....My buddy fished a big walleye tourney up there and I was surprised at the weights that were brought in.....I caught my PB largemouth there...

There are some really good channels on that lake that holds big LM. Just be careful going into them. It's real shallow getting to some of them. Docks and around boats is good also. Sanko's / worms / spinner baits. Look for weed patches for SM on the lake.
