    Grinding Noise - 2002 Johnson 150hp

Not sure if its something about to go out but when the ignition is turned and engine starts up, there's a prolong grinding noise for a couple seconds. Is this normal? Obviously you can hear this louder when attempting to start and it doesn't for the first couple times. Never had a problem starting though.

New Optima battery so its not a weak battery problem.

Any ideas? Starter about to give?

    2002 Johnson 150hp J150PLSNF

    Thanks!

Kind of hard to diagnose sounds on the internet. It may be somewhere in your upper gear drive or in the starter itself. If you are near the FL/GA line, I'd be glad to give it a look/listen for you.

Thanks for the offer but I'm 30 mins South of Atlanta. I'll try posting a video next time I go out.

I know its hard without a video but prolonged spinning/grinding which led me to believe its something with the starter perhaps.

Next time it happens shut it down quickly and pull the cowl...see if the bendix drive is hung in the flywheel.

Hard to do on a 60* motor, it is under the flywheel cover and you have to take a million bolts off to get there.
