Broken Ground wire on outside lower unit

1B972754. Somehow I have broken the ground wire on the outside lower unit. Does this need to be replaced? I thought I had read this ground wire was needed if the boat motor is stored in the water all the time? Maybe I'm dreaming too.

If it's damaged I'd replace it... They put it there for a reason... Dan

I'd guess it's more of a bonding wire since it appears to be stainless steel.

Don't you have to remove the motor mount to replace it? That's a big job, power head has to come off.

There are actually two (2) ground wires- one is hidden UNDER the port side lower mount cover, the other attaches under the NUT at the front of the Swivel YOKE (and via a 6mm bolt, to the swivel bracket).

If the outer/visible ground is the one broken- it can be replaced WITHOUT removing the mount or driveshaft housing (simply hold the bolt that is hidden under the cover, remove the nut, replace the ground strap, reinstall and retorque the nut, then reinstall the cover over the mount).

Note: This outer ground strap is often damaged by a worn engine support socket (large metal socket with a rubber insert that wears away pretty quickly)... often caused by running the trim down excessively once unit is installed. Once the engine rests firmly on the support, there is no need to continue running "down".

If it's the one hidden under the mount... that's a different story.

With your engine serial # you can look it up on European Marine's parts site or Mercury's online parts catalog.
