how do I retrieve and replace the plastic dipstick/tether from the oil reservoir?
Will it cause any issues if I just leave the dipstick where it is.
I can take the cowling off to check oil level from time to time anyways.

You don't say what HP optimax you have but I cut the plastic dip stock off my 115 Proxs to avoid this problem. Back when the Optimax's had the bead chain style dipstick, there were problems with the chain falling to the bottom of the tank and interfering with the low oil float. I believe the plastic version was Mercury's design change to solve that problem. I doubt if you could remove the broken plastic part without removing and emptying the tank. However, I would be surprised if it caused a problem staying in the tank unless you ran it so low that it covered the oil pick up hole. It may even float in the heavy viscosity oil. I would just remove the cowling to check and fill and not worry unless the low oil buzzer goes off.

Thanx for the reply BR.I have a 2013 115 Opti.
I`ll just leave the tether as is.
Not a heavy user of my engine.
90 hours so far.
Sips oil anyways.
Just servicing plugs, filters, impeller etc for the 1st time since purchasing the engine.
All parts look real clean considering.
Just comin` into Spring down my way.
Fishing is heating up.
Great engine.
Too many components under the cowling are not made in the USA for my liking.
Is the dipstick needed at all with an internal clear plastic oil tank?
