I am not sure if you could even put a compass inside the unit without some sort of magnetic interference. Its hard enough on some boats to find a place for the external heading sensor puck and not to mention some of the internal parts of the head unit

its not a true heading sensor but it does keep the unit from showing the doughnut

Doppler effect from the various satellites provides this in other devices. I'd imagine it's the same. Of course that's just speculation. There could also be a compass inside. Someone that can get Humminbird chat to work find out for us. I'm at work now and can't fiddle with it anymore until this evening.

Whoops, just got it working. Gimme two seconds...

This would be the perfect reason or answer.

Now I added a HS on the rear deck of my boat and I use the HS and GPS for the console unite and just the HS for the bow unit, the bow unit I use its internal GPS because it is almost directly over the TM transducer.

Phones do it all the time. I don't see why they couldn't get it working in a much larger unit. I'm having to go to "level 2 support" to get any answers. The Solix ad states it has an internal heading sensor, as mentioned earlier in the thread.

Edit: Tech (female) said no, you need to buy a heading sensor. I explained the ad saying it had an internal heading sensor, the email support saying it wasn't necessary on the Solix, the heading being correct on the non-moving unit, and changing with a swirl of the screen. She said she'd have to get back with me after talking to another tech. I'm waiting on an email now.

Obviously it's getting its info from some sensor. It's not just guessing at a s/sw directional marker out of the blue.

Phones use what is called a magnetometer, which may be what they are using now in the units not sure though

This time I had the display pointed towards the bow so the "heading sensor" would match the external heading sensor (Southwest). The bow of the boat outside the garage.
The Heading Sensor projects a heading line in gold color. The course projection line is green.
The green line flashes occasionally when the satellites move enough that it is calculated that movement has occurred, of course that never occurred.

At no time in about 45 minutes of watching the GPS diagnostic view did it ever show the heading line without the HS antenna connected.
Also at the top right of the display in the Chart View and diagnostic view, the compass pointer has a (?) without the antenna connected.
Also got the doughnut with the GPS diagnostic view using the internal antenna.

Each time I selected the Chart View without the external antenna connected, the direction icon at the top right would indicate SE or North using either Course Up, Head Up, or COG. When I changed the setting to North Up the icon would indicate North.

With AS GPS HS antenna connected:

After disconnecting the antenna, same antenna choice:

IDK what to tell you there. Maybe try selecting internal instead of automatic for GPS? My heading is showing up correctly on the map without any HS whatsoever externally connected.

Troy, can you run out and check your unit to verify you don't get any positional information on your map when no HS is installed? I've got heading info, Wayne didn't on auto (with previous HS installed), and Humminbird support is giving conflicting information.

Just did and no change. The heading icon at the top still has (?) beside it and the GPS is tracking 19 satellites using 7 of them. Map oriented North and unit facing Southwest.
Post a picture or screen shot with the internal heading sensor functioning.

One more thing, the ONIX and SOLIX can share a heading sensor separate from GPS.

Soooooo can an ONIX share the internal heading sensor from the SOLIX and use its own GPS or the SOLIX GPS?

Wayne, did you dismount your Solix and spin it around? I didn't see it listed. That's what I did then went back to the map screen to view it pointing correctly.
If that works for you too I imagine there's some sort of internal "configurator" that runs when you spin the device.

This is what I had to do last night to get the green line to appear.

Yes, I sort of "dismounted it". It was beside my desk when I first checked the "heading sensor". It is now next to my boat's bow not mounted to anything, just sitting there on the carpet (that's carpet in the above pictures and the steering/power cable for the foot control trolling motor). There is no "pointed correctly" for a compass, it indicates North. A heading sensor would indicate direction based on North.

Are you suggesting that the heading sensor has to be configured each time the unit is used?
