    2004 201 ProXL Prop Help

I just purchased a 2004 201 Pro XL with a 2008 Evinrude eTec 250HO. The motor is on a six inch manual jack plate. The dealer put a 27 pitch tempest plus on it. The prop shaft is 3 1/2" below the pad. The hole shot is terrible. It takes 13 seconds for the boat to come on plane with just me and my fishing partner. I filled the livewells and it took about thirty seconds to come on plane. Any suggestions on props and set up? Thanks for your help.

About 2800 to 3000 RPM while trying to get on plane. Don't know max RPM, lake too rough to run wide open.

It's not spinning fast enough, take out another plug and try it. If still not turning fast enough to 3500 RPMs or a bit more take out the other plug. Report back after you try this.

Thanks for the info. Has anyone tried a Trophy plus with this setup? Maybe a 25 pitch.

A 25 is likely not enough prop and your RPM's will easily exceed max but your hole shot would likely be real quick. You should figure out how exactly the 27 Tempest performs after some more testing before you go off and ask about a 25 Trophy. Seriously man we are trying to help so get out there and do the things we suggested. Use a paint can opener to remove another plug and test it and so on. On the same run pay attention to your max RPM's, water pressure and speed. Rooster tail should be no higher than the top of your cowling. Then report back so we can help.

Removed all the plugs and the RPMs went to 6000 and the prop could not hook up. Tried to put one plug back in but was not able to at the ramp. Will try it with one plug and report back. Thanks

Good start, you may actually need different sized plugs to get it dialed in. Some guys just buy solid plugs and drill holes until they get it figured out. It's a lot of launching and pulling out but it's worth it once you get it figured out. One more thing to check and that's your prop to pad height. Look at the sticky's on top of some of the forums to learn how to check.

Tempest is the wrong prop on a Evenrude IMO. Will just slip like crazy out of the hole.

Not in my experience, I run a Tempest and a Trophy on my 200HO with the Med plugs that came with and both have great hole shots.

I run three large hole plugs with my Tempest and have a good holeshot. Could prolly drop to two in the summer heat and be ok.

My father in law has a ox66 225 on his 201 and he runs a fury four blade 26 pitch prop. That thing jumps out of the hole fully loaded and he has had it to 74 with more to go.

Thanks for the help. Picking up 3 large vent plugs from the dealer today. I am going to try it this weekend with all three installed first. Will report the results.
