Hey guys, a relative just pretty much handed me about a 30" long metal rod, wants me to throw a new handle on it and guides. Said it used to be painted but he wants something over the bare metal. I was going to use thread finish but any reccomendations on how not to make this turn out like crap.

I assume this is a steel fishing rod. The rod finish might peel off but if it didn't should work fine for protecting the metal, urethane should also work. Another idea is to polish it up and put the chemical bluing agent on it. Would protect the metal and look pretty cool too.
