Exclamation New Fluke Rig from Forrest Wood Cup

So I was watching some coverage of the Forrest Wood Cup and I saw a lot of the guys fishing a fluke rig I've never seen before on the schooling bass at Lake Murray. The rig was a heavy fluke bait, like a Strike King Caffeine Shad, rigged on a weighted swimbait hook like a jighead. The idea is to rig the fluke with an open hook to improve your hookup ratio and make the bait heavier with the weighted hook so you can cast it further.

Have any of y'all seen this rig before or used it on schooling fish? Any tips on working or rigging it?

Here's a video on my initial test with the rig:

I've been throwing them that way for a few years, but never thought about removing the clip. I'll have to try that, but with a ball bearing swivel.

I would of thought the treble hook rig would be better for open water????

I would too, but I think it's the fact that the bait works under the surface and give the fish a different look. To your point though, I'm still not sure if I prefer it over a spook or a popper yet.

Switch to braid with a short flouro leader to address the line twist. Another great video.

Definitely a SC trick I haven't seen elsewhere. However, especially for spots, we use a smaller bait than a full sized fluke or caffeine shad. Try out some of your shad profile dropshot baits, you might be surprised... I certainly agree with the above post regarding braid to fluoro, also helps with casting distance. The fluoro leader is essential for keeping the bait down.

I just add one or two nail weight to the belly, I've never had problems getting hooked up on a fluke.
