What does a thermostat cost for my Optimax?

Also, how many of them are there on my 2005?

I have replaced my thermostat on my 2008 9.9 Pro Kicker from stock to a higher temp thermostat (I do not remember the temps) but it was the only one that Merc offered. It was making oil ,a lot. The hotter thermostat has cut the making oil problem down some but still does it. The price of the thermostat kit was $200.00.

I don't need them now, but was thinking before next season I'd replace them.

Unless they are not working properly why change them. I've cleaned mine a bunch of times and have been lucky enough to have been able to even re-use the gaskets. Only had 1 t-stat that failed and had to be replaced.

I thought I read somewhere that it's not a bad idea to replace them. I guess like maintenance on your engine. Plus, the engine I have is a 2005 with only 50 hours on it when I bought it last year (has 69 hrs now), so I figured why not go new. How do you clean a thermostat?

I would imagine he cleaned derbies from them, I was suspsicious of mine and dropped them in a pot and turned the burner on with a thermonitor in there I think they open at 128* +-1.5*. And they sure did. If I was concerned after looking at them I would use and old tooth brush lightly.

+1. No need to replaced them if they're working correctly. Clean them when debris gets stuck in them yes, replace if they get packed with sand, yes.
