    Tying up to Dock Posts.

    Hey Y'all.

Purchased my first boat about a month ago. With the fall fishing heating up I have some questions about tying up. Every time I've gone with my buddies we have tied up to a boat slip that didn't have cleats, just an eye that we use to connect a bow line to the bow eye, and then we tie off to the dock posts near the back of the boat. I can't seem to find any videos on which knots to use when tying up to the post in the slip, and then I'm not seeing anything on that knot on the front of the boat. Do you guys have any ideas on what I should be doing here?

    Thanks for any help!

Do you have access to the top of the post/piling? If so, a clove hitch is THE goto knot, imho.

Hey guys, thanks for the responses. I should of been more clear, these posts are the posts that hold up the roof of the dock. I am unable to get a loop over the top like a traditional post. Also this is how the boat will be kept overnight during weekend trips. I'll keep looking.

Don't tie of to a post or pier cleat with a knot, wrap around or through and tie off with figure 8 on your boats cleat finished off with a locking hitch.

I tie a loop in the end of my mooring lines - then put the loop around the post, pull the tag end thru and cinch tight......then tie off the tag end to the cleats on my boat. Hope that makes sense.

you can still use 1/2 hitches in the same manner. A standard bowline is a favorite of mine, too.

Like you, I'm a novice boat owner and you learn these things quick after a few mishaps and close calls. If your rope has a loop on one end, put that thru the ring and run the other end of the rope thru the loop. Take that end and tie a cleat hitch onto your boat's cleat. Get some of these also: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Taylor-Low-Freeboard-Fender definetly protects the top and your rub rail from getting destroyed... had to learn the hard way... reattaching part of the rub rail wasn't to bad, but removing the bent screws was a pain. .

Use a round turn and 2 half hitches but use the bight of the rope to make the hitches. If you shoot me a pm with your number I could make a quick video and send it to you.

Use a Clove Hitch around the post, then 2 Half Hitches with the tag end over the rope. Make sure you still have at least a foot of tag after the knots.

There are many free apps on google play for both fishing knots and rope knots, with instructions and 3D animation.

Forget the knots, just use a long rope, leave one end in a storage box, wrap around the post,, pull semi snug,, and throw the other end in the same storage box. Just the same as when tying up in a lock.

Thanks for all the tips. Took the boat out this weekend, tied it up using some of the advice here, it worked great!
