My IPad adds words. Most the time it is the second word in the sentence. When the Nazi spelling police are out in force on the BBC they can't stand it.
From what I've looked at about the only thing you can do on an iPhone is turn it off.

I had a droid when they first came out. The autocorrect worked really good on it from what I remember.

Yup...the droid settings are great.
Download Swiftkey and make it your primary keyboard. It's the best keyboard I have found, even better than the new iPhone keyboard. Swiftkey will also learn from your typing which means that words you frequently use together, will be the first option to select. I send my wife similar text messages each morning and all I have to actually type is the letter "G"... it brings up "good", followed by "morning", followed by her name etc etc... try it out, you'll be surprised how often you use the same phrases.
Good advice. If APPLE allows it, get Swiftkey.
My first Droid phone was amazing. It seemed like it knew what I was going to type before I typed it. My new Droid I got this spring is terrible. I don't even have to misspell a word for it to change it to something that makes 0 sense!
Put Swiftkey on it.
