They are getting rid of the smallies. The natives and commercial guys don't want them eating salmon smelt.
Its a bandaid over a bullet hole and the bass and walleye are the scapegoat for the real problem of hundreds of miles of dams, habitat destruction, elevated water temps, regional and global commercial and native fishing. Ever seen the quality of any salmon that has swam for 2 months and 200+ miles past a half dozen or more dams in 70+ degree water? Fresh and bright are not a term that can be used.
There has been enough studies to disprove our states view of bass or walleye on any water that has salmon, which are the priority #1 in the state. Warm water fishermen are a drop of water in a pool of agencies and lobbyist groups that push a high dollar agenda. That money pushes WDFW towards legislation like this. I wonder what the next "fix" for the dropping salmon numbers will be when this makes no difference.
