Hey guys I know all two strokes are hard to start but over the last few months mine has gotten even worse had all my carbs cleaned up this past spring everything works as it should. It's just so stinking hard to start. Just put in a new set of plugs thinking it may help and nothing any suggestions ? It starts fine on muffs but when it has back pressure such as in the lake it's so stinking g hard. Once ya get it going she runs like a screaming monkey thanks

Muffs or in the lake should not effect starting in anyway. Is it just the first start of the day or every start?

Just first start of the day and yes linc and sync was perfermed. Starting procedure I pump up my ball till it's firm. Press key in to choke once then turn the key I always have to leave my throttle in neutral also and give it a lil bit also queen trying to start.

Have same motor. After you confirm compression is good I use the following procedure with mush success. Motor level, pump ptimer ball till fuel is no longer flowing and ball is very firm. Turn key to on position and hold in chock (fuel inricher) for ten seconds, start motor while holding in chock, motor will try to start , hold throttle down a quarter throttle and start again , motor should fire and run, back off throttle. At that point you may need to press chok a few time and give a little blip to the throttle until it smothes out to idle. No need for big revs. The biggest issue is the carbs are empty you hAve to get them full to start with

    good. And hmm
ok that's great info will try that out this afternoon then. So holding that choke key in will keep putting fuel I
    then for the ten sec??

I have the same year motor but a 135.

    1. Level the motor to get the exhaust above waterline
    2. Open Throttle
    3. Pump ball till hard
    4. Hold key in for choke and start her up
    5. Back off throttle then bump a few times

If the motor sat for a few day this may take 2 tries but I found it works the best for my motor--ymmv
I'd agree with you , but then we would both be wrong

First start when the motor is cold sounds like the choke might be failing.

I disagree. They'll start much better on muffs when there's no backpressure than they will sitting deep in the water.

+1 on Gmann recommendations. I've had the same year mercs in XR2, XR4 and XR6. All of them I held the choke for 10+ seconds, give it a little throttle (be prepared to let off) and then if it's been a while since I cranked you might have to hit the choke a couple of more times to keep it running.

On my 2002 V6 the choke works by opening a valve that allows gas to drain from the top carb bowl into the throats of the bottom carb(s), it's not pressurized or pumped, it is gravity fed, so it takes a little while for it to drain down. It's also called an enriched valve. It is an electric solenoid that you can hear click open if it's operating properly. Not sure which precious models have same system.

there is also a fine screen fuel filter that needs to be cleaned periodically. When you push in the choke you should hear the choke click when it's activated if it is working. Do you have a electric fuel pump my 150 did. Those older motors can be finicky.
