The piston stop tool is used to verify that # 1 is actually top dead center, then you can look on the top of the flywheel at the pointer and verify it's pointing directly at the # 1 position on the flywheel.....if not, it's slotted to where you can loosen the pointer and move it into place.

Chapter 2 of the OMC(not Seloc or Clymer) manual I believe 2-48 starts the timing verification process and how to use the tool. Just dont turn it(motor) backwards during verification..

I must be missing something or just getting dumber.Manual says move flyweel 1 1/2" past top dead center insert piston stop turn flyweel clockwise till it hits piston stop and mark flyweel, proceed to turn flyweel again until piston hits stop again. Here is where the problem starts cant turn flywheel unless piston stop is removed manual dont say that part. When I remove the piston stop and get flywheel past TDC and reinstall piston stop set at the same depth, turn flywheel again it stops at the same mark.According to manual it should stop on the other side of TDC.What am I doing wrong? Thanks for any help.

Have to have the piston stop tool before you can do anything. An OMC repair and service manual would help as well..

i bought a piston stop tool at advance auto parts that works perfect. on my 97 225 vindicator it says to remove all the spark plugs. rotate the flywheel clockwise to 1.5 inches past tdc mark on flywheel. on mine 1.5 inches past tdc is 16 degrees mark atdc. i then screw in the piston stop tool in cylinder #1 until it touches the piston and screw in the locknut on the piston stop. i then rotate the flywheel clockwise until it touches again. mine touches at 16 degrees btdc. the middle of both numbers is where your top dead center arrow should be aligned to, mine ends up exactly on the tdc mark on the flywheel
