    Computer issue

I have a Dell laptop running Windows 7, with a remote 19 inch display. Last evening while on my laptop, the screen started flashing and the icons began appearing on the laptop rather than the remote display. Both the remote and the laptops displays were flashing at about a 3 second interval. I did a hard shutdown and that seemed to solve the problem. A few minutes ago I got back on and the same problem occurred. I ran the Disk Cleanup, the CCleaner, and did a Quick Scan with our Norton anti-virus. It didn't make a difference and no viruses were found. So, I did another hard shutdown and let the computer rest about 30 seconds and when I fired it up, only the laptop display showed the icons. I went to the Control Panel and the Display feature and corrected the settings so that only the remote display is used. Now, things seem to be working normally.

Any suggestions on what my problem might be? FYI, there was an automatic Windows update on 8/16.

I just started doing it again. Another hard shutdown and now it's OK.

Sounds like a video card or video driver issue.

It did it again right after clicking on a video on Facebook. That's what also happened earlier. So I suspect it is a video issue. Any suggestions on a fix? Had to post this from my phone.

I just updated the video driver. We'll see if that works.

Thanks bdog7198! A couple hours now and no more problems. I hope the video driver update solved the issue.

Make sure the air vents on the laptop are clean. Heat will make a video card act strange.

I'm going to suggest you stay away from your midget porn sites, Jeff.

    Hopefully the driver fixed it.

BUT.... I wouldn't discount a cable (and/or plug) going bad. Flickering, sparkles, snaps and the like are usually indicative of a hardware issue. (cables/wiring being hardware as well.)

Y2K, now that's some funny stuff there.

OTOH..... there was this family that went to my Dad's church (really fundamental, fire-n-brimstone Baptist church) that KNEW the world was coming to an end for 2000. So they went out and stocked up on propane and gasoline. They lived in a split foyer (drive under garage on the right side). House caught fire and literally BLEW UP with all 5 of them inside, including the mother-in-law. Sad it was, but COME ON PEOPLE..... asking for that one they were. Fire Department couldn't even get close to it with all the propane tanks that kept blowing!

Computer continues to work great. It must have been the video driver.

It's a good idea to blow out the fan often. The heat sink does double duty for the vid card and CPU.

Hopefully the driver solved your issue. If not it's probably the GPU taking a dump. In which case, on Dell's anyways, you're looking at replacing the motherboard since it's integrated.
