    TOO MUCH SET BACK?

When buying a new jack plate can you buy too much set back??? I see guys with 21 boats all the same brand and model with anything from 8 to 10 to even 12??? Can too much hurt?

I don't think too much can hurt performance (someone will correct me on that if I'm wrong), but too much can certainly hurt your transom and may void a manufacturer's warranty. That'd be what I'd worry about.

depending upon the boat, yes it can negatively affect performance. Go with the max the manufacturer recommends.

Can't speak for all boat makes, but my Bullet has a 14" set back and Paul Nichols says no reason to pass 14" at least on a Bullet. I think most jack plate brands only go 15" with maybe an exception to 16" but then you have spacers.

Excuse my ignorance, but what exactly does a jack plate do for you?

In short it gets the motor further back and into 'cleaner' water, and allows you to adjust motor height so you can run it at the most efficient height.

As your boat goes over a section of water it pushes it down/compresses it, as it comes out the back it rises up creating almost a hump (not sure the true term for it), ideally you want the JP to put the motor in that hump. So yes you can move it back too far.
