    Garmin PS21 "Cone of Death"

Catchy title, but not really a cone of death.
Just something I came up with muttering to my self on the water yesterday.

A better description would be "cone of useless screen area"

The 1st two screen shots are taken one after the other to show the small blobs that look like fish are really moving around inside the cone angle.
Wish I had a video, but the blobs were quite active, but only inside the cone of death and never swam outside the cone. Amazing

The next 3 shots are when Scotty increased the Dilithium crystal power and the unit went into warp 7 and then dialed it back because of hull integrity issues.

A different screen view with different depths.

Looks similar to Montess blob from the Mutara nebula

A few people have reported issues kind of vaguely similar to yours recently. They all got replacement PS21's after calling Garmin support. Id give them a call.

Actually, before you do that - how and where is yours mounted? A pic would help a lot.

On a stick, 2ft back from bow on starbrd side
All shots taken with ps21 pointed 30-90 degrees starbrd.
No difference when I unplugged the GT52, trolling motor, other graph(transducer on transom), or the entire boat except for the bow 93sv and ps21

That doesnt sound like there is any blocking. Time to call support.

    Larry
    You may be right.
When I was out yesterday, I spent 5 hours adjusting/testing anything I could possible think of.
The only time I had a rod in my hand was to cast out and verify the target distance with a jig.

Have not had a lot of screen time with the ps21 and wanted to hear from others to see if I was just making some stupid mistakes on adjusting the system or if it is a possible bad Warp core or Power Transfer circuit.

I saw MonteSS post about his blob and realized that this may be affecting other Star Ships.

Sorry for the Star trek references but I was channel surfing recently and caught some of the original 60's episodes.
Seemed so cool when I was 7. Campy high tech for sure.
Did the Lowrance Green box even exist back then?

OK I will stop now. Got it out of my system.

These screen images above were not constant but I would say 40-50% of the time.

Was hoping for images like Troyboy has posted before.
I wonder if his ps31 or higher class graph made a difference in his Panoptix images.
I have not had the same success with Panoptix system as he had.

Thought Todd might jump in but it seems like he is having site access issues currently.

I will call support tomorrow if I get a chance.

    This is the boat mount

    This is the Transducer mount.
I raised the ps21 to 12" above the GT52 and still had the same images.
1 click or two clicks also made no difference.

Yeah, I doubt very much the mount is the problem. They do seem to have had some production issues with a few units, and thats what it sounds like to me.

I take the risk of being too simple minded so I have my own take on potential blocking using the trolling motor mount for Panoptix. That's why I made my own mount to that there was NOTHING, absolutely nothing, under the PS21. Maybe it is unnecessary, but in most of the pics of mounts it looks to me that some of the field of view will be blocked. It could be that I am just being paranoid, but I don't seem to be having these kinds of problems

My wife asks if I'm going to fish every day. I can't fish every day. Some days I might be sick.

Called Garmin Wednesday. Guy on the phone and his colleagues said they have never seen it before. They are showing to experts to decide what it may be and will get back to me.

Sheesh. One person gets told its something they have seen and know about and gets sent a new transducer. The next person gets told they never seen it before.

Look up those other posts where the people got replacement PS21's sent out. See if you can get details - order numbers, names etc via PM. Then call back.

customer service is only as good as the person who answers the phone. don't like the answer you get? hang up and call back until you get someone who gives you the answer you want.

Yep, may very well be a K.I.S.S. situation.

I have been knocking around this very idea in my mostly empty noggin.LOL

On the way home from the lake, I started kicking myself as I thought that the one thing I did not try was to turn the ps21 90 degrees to the GT52 mount to eliminate the possibility of physical interference. I had raised the transducer to 12" above but if your beam line example is even close, that would explain why there was no difference noted.

I rationalized to myself that this could not be the problem as there are pictures of transducers mounted above the TM motor with clear screens such as Troyboy has posted.

I think this is Troyboys boat and install with a ps31

Next trip out I will turn the ps21 90 degrees, disconnect the GT52 at the graph and lower it to the mount shoulder and give it a try.

    Thanks for everyone's input.

I am the one who received a new PS21 from Garmin. Same problem so I guess the transducer isn't the prob.

I assume they will want me to send the MFD in next.

How do you have your ps21 mounted, stick or trolling motor?

I have 2- 93sv units and have tried them both in the bow position.
    Same results.

What MFD model do you have connected to your ps21?

Larry posted a screenshot of his ps21 unit out of the water, in the thread below.

    http://www.bbcboards.net/showthread.php?t=834905

I noted in the screenshot his gain was at 84% so I went out to the boat and tried a few different gain settings with the ps21.

    84%

    230817_2205_00III.jpg

    Auto Low

    230817_2205_01II.jpg

Auto Med..Starting to see the "cone of death"

    230817_2205_02II.jpg

    Auto High...Definite "cone of death"

    230817_2205_03II.jpg

Most or all of the previous screenshots in this thread were at the Auto Medium gain setting on the water.
The screenshots above had the GT52 removed from the stick , so nothing near the ps21.

So the question is ... Stupid user error with the gain set too high or should there be no "cone of death" at any gain setting?
