Bobby Garlands are a fine bait...lots of crappie have fallen for them.
If you get the chance, try some Slab Bandits from Crazy Angler..toughest crappie bait made!

I'll look up those Slab Bandits. I just started seriously fishing crappie this year after attending a Crappie University seminar in February and the baby shad baits by Bobby Garland are the only thing I've used so far. I've caught over 200 in the last week just jigging some tops and I think I'm hooked. Lol I don't think the pattern will change much from now through winter so I'll spend more time trying new baits instead of chasing after them.

Use some Locktite gel super glue to glue the plastic bait to the head of the jig. It will reduce the number of baits you have to replace due to tearing.
You can also wrap the hook with some dental floss and soak it with glue before pushing the bait up. I've fished with the same bait now for 2 months. Part of tail missing and its pretty roughed up, but still catching fish.

nice catch
Fine eating right there and nothing funner to catch. Just finished eating supper, fresh crappie I caught yesterday.
Well Bruce, I tried the Slab Bandits today and they were the ticket. A buddy had some so I got 5 Cajun Crickets and 5 Purple back and chartreuse belly ( he didn't know the name) but I named it Purple Drank. I'm ordering a few packs of each color similar to my fave's plus the Purple Drank. Thanks for the heads up.

purple and chartreuse has been working for me all summer. In fact, I caught this ditchpickle this morning on it.

What size of the Slab Bandits are you using and how are you rigging them, jig head, weedless open hook?
I use the 1000 series (1.75") most of the time. I do use the larger size in the winter quite often, to minimize the dinks as much as possible. Here, we have to keep every fish we catch from December through February. I use weedless 1/8 oz black nickel sickle hooks from Timmy Toms. I trim the weedguard so it just protects the hook. I use Locktite gel super glue to glue the bait to the jighead. Been using the same bait for several weeks now (purple/chartreuse). The tail is torn and the bait is chewed up, but still catching fish.
