    184 trolling motor size

Looking into putting a new trolling motor on my boat. Is the 36 volt, 112 thrust too much? Is an 80lb 24v too small? I have room for the 3+1 batteries in back, but will the weight be too much?

I'm also questioning what shaft length to get...?

Looking for any input and experiences.

    Thanks

What kind of water do you fish? I think the biggest 24 volt with 2 good group 31s would be more than enough for your boat. Personally I would go with 52" shaft. Can't stand it when the motor is constantly coming out of the water in waves.

I am running a 52" 80# ultrex on my 184 and loving it. I feel it's plenty of power for almost any situation which includes rough water days. That said more is always better when it comes to trolling motors. I don't think you will be to heavy.

Most of my time fishing is on lakes less than 50 square miles, and less than 100 miles of shoreline. Not much for wind or waves, but big time wakeboard traffic. Then again, I'll fish the Columbia River a few times a year where barge traffic, big wind, and big waves are common.

For the reasonably little price difference, I think I'll be much happier with the 36v as long as battery weight isn't too much. I've been debating between the 52, and 60 shaft lengths.

I should also mention we fish trout and Kokanee a bit. Trolling and chasing the schools of fish is what that game is about. I think that's where the 36v would be the advantage. Both in speed and run time.

I run a 48" 24V 80# Ultrex on my 181. Moves it more than plenty. I can't imagine a 184 can't be that much different? I've used it for 2 solid days on Havasu without charging the batteries and was fine (Deca group 31 AGM's) But, if you're trolling a ton chasing kokanee, maybe run the 36V since you already have room for the batteries.

I will say the 52" is huge on the 184, I cant imaging the 60". If you pm me your number I cant text you some photos of the 52.

I had a 24volt 56# omc on my 184, it was plenty. Have a 24volt , 74# maxuum on my 196, its more than enough.

I have a MG Tour 80# on my 184, provides plenty of power and infinite speeds.

Thanks to the pics from druthomas, I've decided the 52" shaft is what I'm after. The 60" would just be too much. No oil reservoir, so my fourth battery will take its place without adding too much weight. I have the space, and don't see regretting the extra power or run time of the 112.

I know I'm going against the consensus here, but only for extra power. I do appreciate the info and help.
