    Trim rod replacement.

ETEC HO 250: I had one of the trim rods pad screw break off. The trim rod is mushroomed on the top. So, I ordered new trim rod(wow, very expensive).

How do I remove the trim rod cap with out damaging it ?

I have also noticed that on both sides of the motor. It appears to be scraping when trimming up/down. Is something loose or possibly bent ?

Normal, from the torque of the engine when trimming while underway.

    You'll need the spanner wrench.

Follow up. I bought an adjustable spanner wrench. The trim cap is really tight. I tried taking the cap off but the spanner wrench would slip. I think I will just take it to a Marine mechanic to have it fixed.

    Thanks again for ya'lls input.

An adjustable won't work. We use a 4 pointed spanner that slips over the trim ram and a 1/2" drive socket wrench so it won't slip. For the tilt ram we use a 3 point spanner that is much like a crow's foot wrench.

3-point, and 4 point non-adjustable spanner wrenches -- what do they look like???

    ChampioNman ---

What does a non-adjustable 3-point spanner wrench look like, and also a 4-point non-adjustable spanner wrench --- I'm sure my trim & tilt will require maintenance in the future.

I looked on google and this is what came back as Images......

    Thank You,

They are different for different trim systems. A model number of your motor is needed to give you the correct part number for the wrenches. They aren't cheap.

    ChampioNman,

Thank You for the response, I have a 1994 Evinrude 40 hp model 40TLERE -- no need to answer -- trim & tilt operating A-Ok --

I know when I get into trouble, you and the board will help me.... I just didn't know what the heck those spanner wrenched looked like.

I also know the trim & tilt can be very difficult to do maintenance on, especially with a 23 yr old motor.... Again, Thank You!!! Have a Great Sunday, Sir!!!

Take it to your dealer and ask them to loosen the cap for you. Takes about a minute with the right tool. Then finish the job at home.

My motor is a Etec 250 HO E250HGLAAB. I have come across the following wrench but it's not a 3 pin.

I finally got the proper tools and removed the trim cap and rod. My question is: Shouldn't the trim rod slide out of the trim cap or do I need to
    force it out ?

My trim rod is not coming out of the cap.

Yes it has to come out. Close up the jaws of a vice and place the cap on top of it use a dead blow hammer and tap it out use a flat punch if you have to.

I did not want to damage the cap as that is a $200 part.
