    Prop Help!

I need some help, good advice, suggestions...

    I have a 2004 206 with a 250 Mercury Optimax XS. I have two different props:
26P 4-Blade Trophy Plus (Currently installed)
    27P 3-Blade Tempest Plus
    Hyd. ChampionJac Jackplate

The Trophy comes out of the hole, blows out and once trimmed up has a top speed of roughly 59 mph. I've plugged 3 of the 4 orfices trying to help keep it from blowing out before toping the plane.

So I've called a prop guy a friend referred me to... I was told nevermind the heights of cavitation pad to hub... He said he start with jackplate (hyd.) down and come out of the hole, break plane and go to WOT. He said to begin raising jackplate - Watching RPMS and Speed... once RPMS went up and Speed went down he needed those two numbers. For a ~$350 i can send it in to him and have it worked for my boat... or do I spend a bit more and get a totally different prop??

The Tempest will hardly come out of the hole. I've pretty much ditched it.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions, good advice!!

    I think a fury could be a good prop for a 206 & possibly a bravo.

Do you have a gator or gorilla hull on it?

You can get that 27p Tempest down-pitched to a 26, but no lower than that. Should make a difference, but how much?
Go with the advice above, it's best...you need a 25p Tempest.

We need to hear the guys WOT and I swear by that pic, it has a gator/gorilla hull and that alone might knock him back 1" more in pitch.

U need to be about 4 inches below pad and I have 25 bravo I... 4 blade turning 6100 rpm and about 68 Mph at wot. Same boat and engine. 26 is too much and 5000 is too low. U need to raise your engine and reduce the pitch. U can't get out of the hole because your engine is way too low. There are instructions on how to measure your prop to pad. U need to do this first. Otherwise u will waste a lot of time and money. Trust me as I just wne through this. Don't try to wing it. I started at 4 inches below pad and raised to about 3.75". It works great with two people and a full load. With just me and a full tank it is fine. But me and a 1/4 tank, I start losing water pressure when I trim up at speed. So 4" below pad and a 25" bravo should be fine

My best guess is that your prop is 5.5" below pad hence the very poor performance. I bet I am right. Measure it before you adjust it to 4". And yes 1.5" will make a huge difference. U will not believe it. When u take it for a ride watch your pressure Guage. U should be 20 to 25 at wot. If u are only 15 at wot your motor is too high. Trim down to get your pressure back up and then go home and adjust the height.

Incidentally people swear by the 25 tempest for this boat too but I like the control and lift of a 4 blade prop. Again measure the prop to pad and adjust it to about 4 " and try the 26 trophy once more. U should get out of the hole quicker and hit about 5600 to 5800 rpm your speed should increase significantly.

I have the exact same boat just different color scheme. I'm running a 25p tempest approximately 3 1/2 inches below pad and turning 5700-5800 rpm and running 68-72 mph

If you're in Carlsbad, I'm assuming you're fishing Elephant Butte, which is moderately high altitude, you can't run the same size prop as the sea level guys. Dang sure can't twist a 27. Lot's of well meaning advice, but you should take all variables into consideration before swearing this is THE answer.

I was wondering where that shot might have been taken. Elephant Butte is 80' low, that dam / levee in the background doesn't indicate that. But Pat's right. The Llano Estacado of West TX & Eastern NM is all above 3000' MSL, some is over 4000'. Pretty 206

First off - Thank you all for your responses!

I am in the ~3000 ft elevation. The picture is at Brantley lake here in Carlsbad. The hull protector is a Hambys. I have a hydraulic jack, so I'll get the height set tonight at 4" and work from there. It looks like the consensus is the 25 Tempest. Give or take .25-.50"?? I will try and post my speed and rpm tomorrow evening.

    Thanks again

I guess mine is a barge... I put on a 25 Tempest saturday morning. Max speed was 62mph with the tach at 5400 set at 3.75. I tried 3.5 and 4" and noticed little. The 25 Tempest definitely shot up out of the hole -no blowing out of any sort.

Who is the prop guy you mentioned in your original post? I would think you could get it worked for less than that by a good prop tech. They can typically adjust the pitch + 1", so the 25 may still be the best bet to work with. My 210 came with a 27 Yamaha M, but was also owned by a guy that lived at less than 400' MSL. I'm at 1950' running a 25 now and still need to play with the motor height, but top end is now right at 70 with a load and 2 people. So a 25 may be a bit much at your altitude. You want to be in that 5500-6000 RPM range to get the most out of your setup.

Very pretty boat. Try different props and prop depths. Just a set up problem. They are not very fast boats but 65-70 should be attainable. My buds 206 will do 68 loaded to fish which may be 3 mph less or so for your area. He runs a bravo on his.

How hot has it been? Could that be another factor?
