Mercury 150 Pro XS tension spring breaking
I have a 2016 Mercury Pro XS 150 serial number 2b230106. First tension spring broke at 11 hours and was repaired by dealer under warranty. Second tension spring broke at 18 hours while idling in the canal. It was also repaired by dealer under warranty and besides the spring they replaced the tension pulley and belt. I have read other posters having similar problems with low our mercury Pro XS engines. I am wondering if they have found the solution to this problem. As I fish tournaments I have purchased an extra spring an extra belt and I have learned how to replace them but don't feel like this is something that I should have to deal with on a lower our engine. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

With the exception of the belt my '09 150 still has all original components. I changed the belt at 4yrs "just because" even though the old one was in great condition.

Not common. In the few cases I've seen, it was caused by the tensioner pulley, or the belt (stretched).

Thanks Don, not sure what my next move will be if I break another spring. Would a call to Mercury be appropriate? I feel like dealer has some good mechanics, but they seem surprised by second spring breaking as I am. I want to build confidence in this motor.

I would have that conversation if, and ONLY if, there is a repeat failure in the very near future. If it is not broken, there is nothing to discuss... and if you "jump the gun" you may see a reflection in the "feeling" the technician displays (it sounds like they are using sound judgement in this case... I certainly wouldn't second guess them at this point).
