    I'd try a 24 trophy first.

The XR 2 has a 2 liter displacement and makes power at 6000 rpms at WOT. Prop accordingly.

True, power is actually over 6000 RPMs. I would shoot for 6200 for summer putting you around 6500 winter.
You might have a small lower which could be 1.78 or 2.0 gears, or the larger lower with 1.87 gears. I would start with a 22" trophy. And since 4 blades have more venting, will give a lot better holeshot than a 3 blade.
Fiber reeds also greatly help the bottom en on 2.0 and 2.4 motors.

Thanks , 22 sounds really small. I am not planning on buying alot of props to try. Will probably just take the best guess from most of these opinions and live with it. Without any decent prop on it now, i dont really even have any good rpm data to start from.

    Many XR's came with 1.78 gears. A 22" on a 1.78 is like a 23" on a 1.87 or a 24" on a 2.0 lower. If you are running low 60's mph, starting with the 22will be close with a 1.78 or 1.87 gear. Your not talking a fast boat, and lugging a 2 stroke, especially a 2.0, is a bad thing.

I thought all XR-2's came with 2.0 gears and the XR-4 was the first with 1.78?

The original XR2 cases were small case and very weak. They were based of the old Tower of Power in line 6 motors. And the XR2, which is basically a detuned 2.0 race motor, was too much for them. Even in Mercury school they told us to not replace the lowers when they failed until the owners became very irate, at which point the dealers would then replace them. Mercury knew they had a problem but wouldn't acknowledge it to the public.

The 461 is a heavy boat, when I had mine it ran best with a 22p or 23p, in my opinion the 24p is just too much prop for that boat and motor combo.

Mine came with a big case 2.0, it's an 87 year. Dad bought it new. I hadn't heard of them coming with small cases, interesting learn something new
