2001 yamaha 70 hp 2 stoke. 31 mph. Want to go faster.

    Hi,

I have noticed mostly everyone with smaller outboards are going somewhat faster than I am. I have a hp 170. I just had my wife in the boat and maybe 1/4 tank of gas. GPS showed only 31 mph. Hole shot seems to be great. Has a aluminum prop. Is there a SS prop you would recommend?

    Thanks

How much do each of you weigh and where are you sitting? Do you have power trim?

Yamaha motors respond well to Yamaha props. I'm running a Turbo 1 on both of my boats; a 17" on the 90 and a 19" on the 115. I would recommend that you look at either a Turbo 1 13.25 x 15" or 17" RH depending on how you load your boat. I would start by looking at the pitch of your current prop and match that with the SS one. Going to a SS prop is like adding 1" of pitch.

I finally got a new tach installed. I am turning 5850 RPM and running a solid 33 MPH. problem is my prop doesn't have any markings on it or numbers. I would like to get a prop for for speed and maybe add a jack plate.

If you take your prop to a prop shop, can they measure it and tell you the pitch?
Will the added weight of a jack plate hurt you?
    I have a 1756dlx, I added storage to it. Had a 50hp 4 stroke on it, 32mph. Now have a 25hp 2 stroke, 22.5mph.

I run a Sportsman 17 with a 90hp 4stroke Yamaha, 13X19 stainless prop no jackplate and mine runs 41 mph at 5800 rpm with 2 people in it.

Getting it set up properly is probably going to net you more speed. It certainly would cost less even if you pay to have someone do it. At least try that first or you may be disappointed with a bigger engine as well.
