    Did some idiot calculate this

I dont even understand how minnkota can make a chart like this. It says for mo 20ft boat takes a 12v 55lbs thrust. That wouldn't even pull through lilypad fields

Did you read the "minimum motor size" part?

If you're not in a hurry, and dont want to go far, 55# works fine on a 21ft boat. We had a PowerdriveV2 55# on our deep V aluminum for three years and did fine. Of course, we are more salmon, walleye fishermen than bass, and we didnt work heavy pads except on the edges.

I didn't know of many 20'-21' fiberglass boats that weigh 2500 lbs or less so they must be referring to tin boats. That said a 55 TM may be fine for tin.

Yeah, minimum is the key word there. My boat weighs around 2700 lbs and while I could get by with a 55lb, I wouldnt WANT to run less than the 80lb 24v that I run. Granted the only time I run it over 60% is when Im moving to another spot across a cove or something, but knowing I have the power to fish current, etc is nice also

For most an 80 lb 24 volt is ok. ----- For serious fishing -- especially all day in the wind -- Bigger is better.

Us "old timers" can remember when a 24/36V trolling motor maxed out at 67# thrust. The OMCs that everyone loves in the earlier years would top out around 40#s. These trolling motors were put on 19' boats -- it's all we had and it worked. Not as efficient as the larger motors, but it let us go fishing.
With that in mind, yes a 55# could be a minimum for a 20' boat -- not what people "want", but would be a minimum

I remember my OMC trolling motor had a 12/24 volt switch. Left it on 12 just about all the time on a 19' Ranger. There is a difference in what works and what people think they need.
