So this weekend after making a three hour trip I launched my boat and couldn't put it into gear. It finally went into reverse after I pulled the shifter all the way back but then I was stuck in reverse (a very scary situation until I shut the motor off after I freaked out). I got it back on the trailer and opened up the cowling to see the attached pictures. The shifter linkage on the side of my motor was detached. How can this happen? Can it happen simply from hitting a pothole or something? I really don't think so. Could it be from my kids playing on the boat inside the garage and trying to slam it into gear without the motor on? I was able to fix this at the ramp by lifting up the linkage and placing it back on the little silver knob and then twisting the silver cap back on so it locks the two pieces together. I'm just worried it will happen again. It ran fine all weekend after I fixed it. Anything that I should be worried about?
