Whew, glad I read the whole post, thought they had another fatal collision there other than the one reported/posted earlier this week.

This is the reason I carry a q-beam to shine and let boats where I am positioned when it appears they trying occupy the same spot on the lake as I am.

How awful for the girl to be orphaned due to a silly fishing tournament. The guys that hit them were in a hurry, probably staring at a GPS screen and going too dang fast. No, I have no idea how many MPH they were going, but if you hit an anchored boat with lights on, you were going TOO FAST. A good reminder to all of us to keep our fishing in perspective.

This really sucks. This poor little girl lost both her parents. This is hoing to be a night she will never forget. Both boats had proper lights on they said and everyone was wearing the life jackets. I have a super bright led light on top of my engine and my buddys hate being behind me on tournament take off. Now im even happier I have this super bright led light. Maybe the other boater didn't see his navi lights.

Hope you don't shine the light right on the boat, as this will cause him to lose his vision for a while as his eyes re-adjust to the darkness.

    What a sad story...

That is true, but if I have had a light shined on me while running at night I would instantly drop off plane to idle until I figured out what was going on. Actually I'm pretty paranoid of running on plane in the dark anyway...

I think what stirs me the most is the risk - I know there are many of us on BBC that came close to dying serving our country and had friends and relatives that did not come home. I just can't see taking risks to go fishing - I mean.... is it really that important???

I have never been on a lake that even had a speed limit, much less one after dark. That must be a northern thing.

Speed limits can't fix unsafe operation.

does not necessarily have anything to do with how fast they were going, but the shoreline on the south end is nothing but houses and docks and a boat light can just blend in with the background.

If the surrounding area can cause a boat light to blend in with the background it seems to me that speed could have everything to do with it - as in too fast for conditions possibly?

While a speed limit might not be an end all solution, it would slow tournament boats unless they wanted to risk being DQ'd...

This is very sad for sure! I fish Lake of the Ozarks at night a lot. It is probably one of the most dangerous lakes to be on at night because of all the waterfront bars and restaurants and big boats along with all the shoreline lights. There is a 35 MPH speed limit from dusk till dawn. I see boats all the time with lights that don't work or they're so dim you can't see them until your right on top of them. Approaching a boat from the rear is the worst. I have put the brightest lights on my boat that I could find because i want other boaters to see me.
