    oil shelf life

    what is/is there a shelf life on opened (and sealed back) container for 2 sroke engine oil ? cousin runs a 280ss on a quartershot drag boat and usually has some left over after the season.

    My brother went through this with Mercury. He called and talked to a rep. at the 800 number. All they would say is smell it, if it smells like oil it's good... Dan

    What if the container hasn't been opened?? How long would it be ok, and also lower unit lube

    3-5 years is the industry standard for self life of industrial grade lubricants stored in their OEM sealed container.

    Found this from Bob the oil guy forums:

    SOPUS & Mobil both said 24 months. The schedule they sent me was:

    Unopened in factory sealed container stored indoors = 60 months
    Unopened in factory sealed container stored subjected to freezing = 24 months
    Once opened and air introduced = 12 months.
