    1989 201 Dcr set up

    Hello All,
I swapped motors out and all is well, except the boat doesn't seem to get as much air under it as with the previous motor.
    Here is what I have.
    1989 champ 201 Dec
    1999 Johnson 225 ho
    Raker HO 22p
    No jack plate
Full rear tank, front empty, 2 guys, full load of tackle, small cooler. Tm, 3 batteries etc.
Gets about 65 mph. But it doesn't feel like it's airing out much. Rooster is under the cowl.
Any ideas where to start prop to pad? 3.5 inches? Any other reccomendations?

    Thanks

3.5" prop to pad is a good starting point. I would think that 225 would be able to turn a 24-25p prop pretty easy. What rpm's are you hitting at 65mph?

STL, honestly I did not look yesterday. At 5300 I am at 55mph. Last motor I was at 5800 at 64mph. Just measured the prop to pad and it is at 3.5 inches.

65 is about right for a 225. Set up just right you might be able to get a couple more. Odd though, a 25 tempest should be the prop for that boat and motor.

It's been pretty warm lately. Maybe that's digging into to your numbers a little bit, too. Which lake were you on?

No plate can't run at 3 1/2 too high. Second hole up is where it should be at.
Six inch rapid jack would help a lot but you're showing a ton of prop slip the way you are right now.

I was at Canyon. It was about 90 with 80 as the water temp.

Is that 2nd hole from the bottom of the mounting bracket? I believe I am at the 3rd hole from the bottom right now. As far as slip, is this where I send the prop out to get worked on?

I've got almost the same rig as you but my HO is a 2001 so not much difference. I've got a 7.5" RJ set at 3.5" turning a 25P Tempest Plus two holes plugged and one medium PVS plug in..You want that motor to spin in the 5850 range. T load with two in it I'm running 69-70, you may want to try a 24P Raker. I can feel it come up on the pad at about 55. I had a 2000 MY 200 on it and was running steady 65-66 with a Raker on it.

2nd hole from the top. I would get the height right and try the 24 Raker C-man recommended before sending your prop out.

Canyon is what... 1600 feet? I was thinking your 225 was carbed but it's probably EFI, so that elevation shouldn't matter. You must have been there at the crack a$$ of dawn to to see 90. LOL! I think we saw 121 last week.

I can check and see if I still have a tempest plus if you want to try one. I had a couple of 25's (one worked by Croxton) but my son has been parting out my old Venom and I think the props might be gone already. I do have a CMC high speed hydraulic jackplate sitting in my garage that's in very good shape if you want to go that route. A perfect 6" setback for that boat. I even have the spacers if you want to try an 8" setback.

90 degrees and 1600' probably not enough to affect it much?

We actually went out at midnight on Saturday. Weather was nice, felt like 75 over night with a slight dip before the sun came up. We were done by 9AM. I will drop the motor another hole and see what I get. I may hit you up on the loaner prop if you have any left. I dont think the jack plate will work, I still have the dual cable steering. As mush as I would like to do hydraulic, that will be next years budget.

I will report back once I get the motor dropped a hole and another run at the lake.

6" plate works fine with cables.
    8" would not.

Yeah, mine was originally rigged with cables and a CMC hydraulic 6" jackplate (an older unit).
When I switched my steering to hydraulic a few years ago I added the new jackplate and spacers.

I know this is old, but as I have an 89 201 and will be going through this myself soon and have the similar questions and I wanted to add to the conversation.

I have a 9.5" on my 201 SCR and it has dual cables (though honestly not sure if that setback is too much as I didn't get to run it after I bought it due to discovering it needed a full rebuild)

Had a 9.5" on my 201with a super strong running 200 Johnson. Found it was a tad too much. Talked to Chuck at Hydro Dynamics and we agreed to change the backing plates out down and made it a 7" plate. I sold the 200 and picked up a cherry 225 HO the 7" is just right for my rig.
