    1993 Fastrike Regulator

Can a bad tach cause the failure of regulator? My regulator recently cooked off, so to say. I had been noticing the tach had been acting haywire this year. Worked at idle-1500 then nothing above that. The last time out it had nothing at all at any RPM. which came first? the chicken or the egg? Which failed first, the tach or the regulator?
I have the new regulator, but am gun shy on installing it at $240... Plus wiring that burned and plastic covers...
Championman, you are the resident know all, what is your opinion? The battery cables are lock nutted and tight, fyi.

regulator more than likely causing tack problem, not to say it hasn't got the tach. replace regulator and go from there.

Don't know if I should take that as a compliment or an insult? More than likely the VR cooked from the extra purple wire the new VR's don't have the purple wire. On your engine's wiring harness, zip tie the existing purple wire into the motor harness. Tach just sits there waiting the signals from the gray wire.

LOL!!! No offense meant for the "know all". The replacement has both a gray and purple wire. Dont use the purple?

That would be an aftermarket. The CDI part on www.marineengine.com #193-4093 lists for $193.16.

OK. Thank you for the info. I will leave the purple wire unhooked.
