Been thinking about going up there this weekend to check it out. Is it worth the drive? what is there to do beside sand dunes and cold lake MI water? Thanks.

Train access to Chicago, several casino's, an outlet mall (wifey will love that!!), and there are some winery's in Southwest lower MI.

My daughter, son in law and grandkids went up there last summer on a camping trip. They love to hike so that's pretty much what they did. I don't really think there is a whole lot to do around the Dunes. If you've not see the Dunes, I'd say its worth it, to me its an interesting area.

Heather and I went not long ago. Like bill said, not much to do other than hike the dunes and lay on the beach. Lots of non-English speaking people at the beach out of Chicago, it was like we were no longer in Indiana. Lots of Russians, Hispanics and Asians and NONE of them were speaking English, didn't bother us, just didn't expect so many. The beaches get crowded so be prepared for a long wait to get in and a long walk to get anywhere.
Be careful getting in the water up there. You may come out with some new body parts, or third eye. I've never been there when the water wasn't completely off limits due to pollution.
Can I recommend Warren Dunes, just around the corner in Michigan. Less crowded and better clientele with plenty of sand to mess up your vehicle!

I'll check out Warren Dunes. I've been thinking about going further north to the South Haven area. It looks much nicer, maybe not as crowded and cleaner.
Michigan City has a zoo that is very nice, the beaches are good and Mount Baldy is open again. As for water quality.... let's just say it's plenty clean these days. Gin clear, but it will be a tad chilly.
Food, you got lots.... Lakeshore Brewery is good, a quick 20 minute drive gets you to New Buffalo and Redamak's, Skip's is expensive but great prime rib, and on 421 is a whole host of places to eat.
Been to Warren Dunes a bunch, and Michigan City offers a lot more other than the lakeshore.
I think I will go up to New Buffalo in mid July and get me a Famous Burger at Redamak's (check reviews).
Redamaks has some good burgers, I've had better in several places, but it's worth stopping in there. July might be tough, as the place isn't air conditioned, or at least it didn't used to be. Not been there for probably15 years.

Thanks for the invite Joe. I wasn't able to do any fishing last Saturday anyway, perhaps this coming Saturday? Your neck of the woods or mine, doesn't matter.
So I went up to Warren Dunes yesterday with the family, nice area. The water was clean and cold, beach was crowded. It reminds me of this picture.
When we left, the parking lots were full and people were lining up at the gate trying to get in. They had to park right at the entrance and walk at least a mile or two to the beach carrying their stuff. My MIL said the line of people walking in looked like refugees.
