    Max Hp for 98 196

Just picked up a very clean 98 196 at a deal I couldn't pass up. Wanting to re power it with a Mercury Pro Xs. Currently it has a 175 Johnson on it. Would a 175 pro Xs be the right match? I see some of these boats had 200 HP motors when they were built. I'm wondering if the hull can handle the extra weight of today's 200s or should I go with the 175.

What's the recommended max HP listed on the plate inside the boat?

That hull should handle a 200, the question is if it would be overpowered per the Coast Guard plate.

Your only problems with overpowering might be in getting insurance, and additional liability if you're in a boating accident.

    The max. hp on a 1998 196 was a 200 HP.

I would go with a 200 over the 175. Weight of today's 200 hp should be comparable to that of a 1998 200 hp.

Is there anything wrong with the 175 that's on it now?

Hole In the block. I'm thinking of getting a new powerhead.
