1990 482v w/ 175 blackmax need help on plane and top end please

My 482v has a 175 blackmax and a 23 pitch tempest prop. With tackle , 25 gallon of gas, 4 batteries , full wells, and my 340 lb ass is very sluggish out the hole and tops out at 55mph it has a manual jack plate. I just bought the boat last week it also has a 24 pitch Pro Tech 3 blade which I have not tried yet any suggestions for me would be appreciated.

Top speed seems fair for the load its carrying. I am at 56-57mph with a 482V, 150 merc, and 23p prop with myself at 200lbs and a passenger about the same weight, low gas, low tackle, and empty wells.

We need some pics for fun

my 95 481vs with 150 merc xri with a high five prop tops out at 62 wth two skinny guys and some gas in one tank. I had a merc mechanic guy fix my bad trigger. He did a test run and said 61mph @ 6100rpm I believe on the rpm.

As far a hole hole shot goes mine flies out the hole unless Its right after I start it up or idler for a long time.

I agree with others that you are in the ball park with the weight in the boat. 4 batteries and full live wells will make it tough to get out of the hole, particularly as the days get hotter. How many rpms are you turning on top end?

I had to a 36v on mine. With 4 group 29s it would take forever to get on plane. I switched to a new 24v fortrex to two group 27 and the biggest group 24 I could find. It made a huge difference.

My 481vs will run 61 with me by myself (225ish), full tanks (40+ gallons) and full livewells, rods and tackle, and 4 group 31s with a Motorguide 36v X5 on the bow. No jackplate...yet. Just have to install it. It's an XRi instead of a Black Max and I'm running a 25 Tempest Plus with 1 large PVS plug. As strange as it sounds, the full livewells and tanks and even an extra passenger don't seem to make much difference on my top end. Maybe 62 if it's light, 60 if it's loaded as above and add a passenger. It's really the hole shot that changes drastically under the heavy load.

It'll fly out of the hole with all PVS vents open if I'm by myself with empty livewells and half full of fuel, but it blows out when it's loaded down so I need to run that PVS plug.

Based on reading about the "Green Hornet" and talking with some other guys who are running my set up, 65+ is well within reason with a light load once I add the jackplate. Maybe the VS hull makes that much of a difference, though you having a jackplate would make me think not.

EDIT: Definitely would be interested to hear what RPMs you're getting. It should run better than that with a 175 and half full of fuel.

The more I think about this, the more I think something just isn't right. Hole shot shouldn't be too much of a problem with a 23p prop, especially since I'm comparing it to my 25.

What's your prop-to-pad measurement? I'd bet that motor needs to come way up from where it sits currently.

Hopefully the boat isn't waterlogged or something.

I think about switching to the prop you have Drew I just wonder how much I lose on the hole shot and on plane at lower speeds.

I run up a windy river alot and it cavitates longer than I want it to on the turns so it has me wondering.

I'm no expert, but I wouldn't think you'd want to move up in pitch if you're not happy with the hole shot you have now. A hydrofoil could probably help with both the hole shot and the cavitation thing, but cavitation could also be a symptom of not having the engine height right. The hydrofoil also shouldn't alter the top speed for better or worse. Try checking your prop to pad measurements and see what you find out (I believe there's a sticky at the top of this page that shows how to do that...if not, I'm almost positive there's one on the bass boat setups page). I believe you want to shoot for 3.5 inches then adjust from there, keeping an eye on water pressure, though again others would have better advice than me on that. I also know that some props like to be run higher than others.

Knowing your RPMs at wide open throttle should help as well.

Prop slip calculator says you're getting 16% slip if you're running 56 at 5700 RPMs. Sounds like the prop might need some work! Under 10% should be a very reasonable expectation with a prop that is in good shape. With everything else the same (and realize you might not be able to turn the prop as fast with less slip, though I suspect you will if you get the prop worked by a good prop guy), you'd see 60 mph with 10% slip and 5700 RPMs.

Here's a link to the calculator so you can play around with it. Your motor has a 1.87 gear ratio. You can fill in all the boxes and leave one blank and see how it will change with different slip percentages, prop pitches, or see what theoretical speed you could get out of a given prop pitch.

I had a 91 481V with a 2003 175 Evinrude DI and would run about 63 with me at 360 lbs and pretty much full gas and tackle. When I put someone else in the boat it would be about 59-60. I was running a 24 Raker. Holeshot was great whether I had one person or two. maybe try bringing the motor up a bit with the manual plate?
