If the only way the motor will run is by tapping on it then more than likely it needs to be repaired or replaced. The 0438531 has been superceeded to 5005376, there are aftermarkets available. If you purchased your pump motor from your local dealer and have your receipt ask them about replacing it under parts warranty.

Through boats.net. They have a record of when I purchased it. Is it a defect in the motor? It looks like it was the 5005376 that was sent.

Is it possible to take the motor apart to look for corrosion? Or is it booby trapped?

You could take it off and bring it to an auto electric shop and have them check it out. if they can repair it, it will be about $75.
