    Dying when shifting INTO neutral

1998 Johnson 175 model J175PLEES, S/N G 04606022. Having an odd issue when shifting from forward or reverse into neutral. Probably 40-50% of the time engine will die, yet will immediately start right back up. Usually expect it when shifting into gear, but this is the opposite. Engine starts easily, idles fairly well and top end is great. Basically, have no complaints at all on how the engine runs except for this. Annoying at low speed maneuvering around the dock, loading it on the trailer etc. Any ideas? I was kind of thinking neutral switch in the control but not really sure. Only have the issue when shifting into neutral, no other time does it do this.
    Thanks,

I would suspect the shift interrupter switch.

Follow the wire harness up from the shift linkage and look for the black/yellow wire into the power pack. Unplug the connection at the pack and try it. If the motor now shifts properly without issues you may have a binding shift rod. This happens especially in salt water use with corrosion build up around the shift rod housing.
