    Jack Plate Repair

Just wanted to update you guys about the repair I made to my jack plate. I ordered some shimms(bearings) from Bobs. It appears to me after taking this plate apart this week that those plastic sleeves would need to be replaced every few years based on use. After installing the new sleeves(bearings) all movement seems to be gone. Im not sure if many guys go through the trouble of changing those sleeves(bearing) on there plates. The 3rd pictures shows the extreme wear to that inner sleeve(bearing). Its hard to see but it's paper thin about 3" from the top of plate. Hopes that this helps someone. I had a discussing on the stroker board under "The best jack plates". You guys may want to check it out.

Does the engine need to come off, before the plastic sleeve is inserted? I never heard of that, wow

I dont know why you don't swap the Bob's for a Detweiler while you have the motor off the plate. Bob's plates are inferior to Detweiler plates to begin with. Good Luck though.

Well...Because the slimms(bearing) only cost $35.00 and it fixed the problem. I have no play at all in the plate now.

No, the motor can remain bolted to the plate.

Savage, how do you accomplish this? I'm getting ready to replace mine. I have an engine hoist, so no big deal removing the weight of the motor. If you can't remove the plate that the motor is bolted to, how do you insert the new plastic shims?

I received my new shims..where do the screws go? The new shims aren't drilled. Are the old shims held in place by screws?

I believe they are if not the shim would slide out. There are 3 flat head Phillips screws in each rail. These have to be removed to pull the sleeve and new ones installed. I THINK they self tap into sleeve. Gambler 69 should comment if he sees this.

    Hey Gamblinman,

The motor WILL need to be removed for the slim install. Send me your number in a private message and I will talk you through it.

    Thanks

Not a bad job to do. My original bearings were shot. They pretty much fell out in pieces when I tried to remove them. Used a clamp and rubber mallet to put the new ones in.

    Thanks for the tips!!
