Vmax 250 pees a weak stream

I have changed the water pump and thermostats on this 2003 and fixing to change the poppet valve(as some call it) and looking input from those with experience on what else may cause this. Anything simple i can check or change?? I have seen many other motors like mine and they all have had a stronger stream than mine. Also, wants to overheat when idling sometimes because alarm goes off. I have back flushed and checked intakes many, many times and found nothing. Thanks in advance for any ideas, help or suggestions.

When you say weak stream, are you talking just at Idle? Have you ran it to see what kind of water pressure you get?

At idle, runs on 4 cylinders , weaker stream,, in gear 6 cylinders, stronger stream, but as mentioned earlier, was impeller installed in the right direction??

Clean / replace pressure relief valve and spring. Blow compressed air into stream orifice with outboard running on a hose. Blow it repeatedly.

If the impeller as put in with backwards rotation It will grenade in a very short time. ( its pretty hard to put in with the wrong rotation) If the impeller housing was in good shape and you hooked the tube up when reinstalling the lower unit you should have a strong stream. If not you may have some debris in the pressure relief valve. Its a PITA is get to so it's best just to replace it. Check for sand and gravel once the old one is off.

Use this poppet valve it's got a different style head. They don't get stuff under them as bad as the old style.

Did you change the pump housing? I chased something similar and didnt see improvement until I changed out the housing.

The nylon/rubber grommet on the pump housing can crack over time causing one to scratch their head.

I really appreciate all the responses from everyone. Thanks a bunch. Been tied up with my daughters' surgeries but will get to work on it soon. I replaced everything that had to do with the water pump. Only thing i found that i thought could have caused it was there were a couple of spots where the gasket sealer someone used had partially blocked the channels the water is suppose to flow thru. Impeller and all else was great but i replaced it all anyway. I have the pressure control valve and all the parts that come with it and will change it out next along with checking the lines like Charlie206 recomended. I will post what i find if i can find the problem. Thanks, again.

just did the poppet valve on mine- not a big deal - 10 mm ratchet with a knuckle- use the stick method posted at the top of page- water pressure went from nothing on the gauge at idle to about 3 or 4 psi and up to 17 or so at WOT- this was also after replacing the water pump with a complete kit- you may have the new style in your motor- I did- mine was a late in the year 07 model

This is a late response, but did not get the poppet valve changed untill last week and i am happy to say it appears to have cured my problem. Idled around for almost 1 hour with no overheat alarm. It was tuff getting the new one in but i was persistent and got it done. Thanks again for the responses to the thread.
