    Seen several fat shafts broke in my area.not sure but don't think they are tempered like the small shafts and if I'm not mistaken small shaft cost is more than the fat shaft

    Naw, the big ones are out'a sight!
    The problem with the fatty is too much stepdown from the shaft to the threads. They should'a made the thread diameter larger as well as the shaft.
    As you can clearly see in this pic. this shaft was cracked for some time, thus the rust in the one area and none where the clean break is. After a week, the fresh break area has still not rusted!

    I would say that over torqued nut can cause this make sure to torque to merc specs never use a impact.
