Man that really sucks! Not only have to fix the broken stuff, losing the prop when that happens might hurt worse than the broken shaft

I let off the throttle after an 8200 rpm run and before I knew it the boat lost grip and slid to a stop. Wouldn't go forward or backwards, raised the engine for a look-see and this is what I found. Good thing I was only 2 miles from the ramp as the troller got me in!
These dang fat shafts are an arm'n a leg, even with my Pro Marine discount :(
Somebody has to have a trashed lower unit they'd sell the shaft out of!!!!

Do you think youve been over tightening the nut? Thats the only thing i can think of that would break it in that spot

I've seen 6-8 fat shafts break in the same place.

Alli, I always torque to specs!
Looking at the shaft, it has a rusty place, about the size of a little fingernail which evidently has been cracked for some time. The rest of the "fresh Break" is not rusty.
It is a pretty stupid move for Merc to produce a larger, beefier shaft while maintaining the same small thread size. The step-down is too large and just invites problems. The old 1" shafts would twist splines and sometimes break but very seldom break at the threads, if ever!
Hopefully my insurance will come through then I'll be able to fix it and be paid to do so!!!

Only small shaft I've ever broke was in front on the splines, plus 1 driveshaft at the splines just below the powerhead.......
lots'a Nitrous on holeshots caused both! Twisted splines on several but they ran straight and never broke!
This was the 1st prop I've lost in 49+ years of hammering on Mercury's, not to mention the 20 years pryor that my dad ran'em!!!!!!
