    What is it ???

Am the new owner of a 1986 Evinrude tiller handle 40 hp motor--# E40rcd. Motor ran hot cause waterpump tube missed water pump (previous owner) . It has a blown head gasghet. Found a spring and melted goop in hole 1. I assume hole 2 is thermostat but it looks nothing like the picts on some parts diagrams!!

    Questions:
Is it the bypass valve?? and what is the order of installation of it's parts-----spring -valve-sleeve or another combination?
How do I check operation of thermostat?

    http://www.boats.net/parts/search/BR...ASE/parts.html

Item 14, 15, 16(install 14 grommet first, then 15 relief valve and then 16 spring and then new gasket and cover.........no need to go to another forum. Plenty of help here. I would replace thermostat and gasket as well just to be safe.

Don't even test the thermostat, due to age and an overheat, just replace it and related seals and gaskets.

That's a great idea!! We can all go to Iboats and shut this forum down.

I think he could wait until morning. But it is a good thought. We hate to be overworked and under paid.
