Onix 8 goes to blank grey screen

Not sure what to do, Onix acts like its going to boot up but then goes to a gray screen and stays and will not do anything and in order to turn it off i Have to hold down the power button for approx. 15 seconds. Any ideas? Thanks

First thing is to make sure you don't have a power problem.

I just updated a new Onix 8 si, installed on a new boat, to 3.0 and the 3.030. One hour later I had the same issue. I never even got to try it on the water. I already sent it in to humminbird. Very frustrating!

It cannot be stressed enough that higher-end units have very demanding power requirements. In my opinion, Heavy gauge wire is required for runs from the battery to the units power cable to assure enough current flows to the unit, avoiding power related issues.

Same thing happened to my new Onix10 after the update. Sent it in and CS reinsatlled the software. That is all they wrote on the service ticket.

Happened to me too. Send it in. It is the screen of death---no fixing that one.

Well guess what got my Onix back and went to lake on Sunday turned it on and it started going nuts. First turned it on and the start up screen blinked a couple times, i went to side image screen and it looked really bad, horizontal sguiggly lines, never looked like this before, could not adjust out, then I went to the views screen to create a new side image view and noticed several of the screen view blocks had blank grey screens with names under them also some of the screen were not labeled correctly, really strange, like the down image screen was labeled chart, the 2d screen was labeled instruments so I went to factory restore to see if restore would correct everything. Turned power off after restore waited about 5 minutes and restarted and the damn thing went back too the same gray screen as before after trying to boot up for about five minutes, tried several more times and the same thing gray screen, I am not a happy camper at moment so hummingbird will be called again. Checked voltage and had 12.5 volts at unit plug and 12.8 at battery. Wiring is 8 gauge wire and installed as it should be, 798 and 859 working like new no problems. Don't understand doing nothing different than what I been doing in the past and everything else checks good. Seems like processor is going bad. All they said they did was reload software. Time to dig further or replace

I haven't gotten mine back from humminbird yet, but I had the same msg from the service tech that the software was reloaded. In the mean time I ran 10 gauge wire direct to the battery to power it when I get it back.

Exactly how did you verify the power?

8 gauge? Would be great.... or 18 (mistype), would not be enough.

Even if the wire is 8 gauge, there could still be connection or fuse problems. It's also possible there is an internal intermittent problem that didn't show up at the repair center....best way to know for sure would be to try the unit on someone else's boat. That would eliminate the possibility of an installation issue.

An intermittent problem with the unit is a possibility, but these type of issues VERY often turn out to be a power issue....especially after it's been to the repair center.

I actually changed from 12 gauge to 8 gauge between the time I shipped it the first time last week so it did this on both gauge of wires 12 and 8
