    Evinrude shift control problems

    Started noticing going from forward to neutral is getting harder.it takes several times and finally it will go back into neutral. The shifter will go into neutral but the engine stays in forward.I have looked inside the engine and appears the control cables are working properly. Is the problem probably in the controls.thanks guys
