I wouldn't want to drill holes int he transom for it. What if you want to change them out to something else later or sell the boat but want to keep them? It is more expensive to go with a jack plate mount or sandwich bracket but might save you money in the long run.
do not mount them directly to your transom,.
I don't plan on it but I heard of it being done and I wondered if it was true....

I lot of saltwater bay boats have them mounted directly to the transom and I have never heard of a problem. It's no different than drilling holes in the transom to mount your outboard.
