    Recarpet and hinges?

I am recarpeting my Ranger 390V and as I was pulling the old carpet off the lids I noticed that the hinges are pop riveted on and that on the back side/inside of the lid the carpet covers the pop rivets. What is the best way to do this? Do you just glue the carpet to the top and then fol that side down and pop the rivets in the hinges and then fold it over the rivets on the back side. Also what it the best way to get holes in the carpet to put the rivets into the lid? Thanks

I also was wondering about how to find the previous holes with carpet over them.

I placed the hinge on the newly carpeted lid and used toothpicks to find the holes. Worked well and after doing the first couple lids the rest went really fast.

How do you get holes in the carpet once you find then if your not using screws but pop rivets.

Once I centered the hinge to the lid I was able to push through the carpet and backing with a toothpick. Once you find the first hole the others are all lined up so I pushed toothpicks through all the holes to hold the hinge in place then I replaced one at a time with rivets. The holes in the carpet don't have to be big to push the rivets through.

Thin wire, maybe a coat hanger will find the holes. One trick when trying to drill a hole in carpet is drill backwards and it'll keep from pulling threads. (This is also CRITICAL when drilling into gelcoat to keep it from chipping!!! Well, at least 'start' the hole by drilling backwards, then switch to forwards and finish the hole.)

Soldering iron. After you do one side of the lip use the exposed inside lip and burn out holes. Then after the inside has set burn from the outside in. Plus you get clean holes and no fighting carpeting when reinstalling hinges. And personally for me, I always go back with stainless bolts. Easy and more solid than rivets overtime.

Awesome, thanks. I thought about bolts but don't the heads of the bolts get in the way of the hinge closing

Don't get a pan head Phillips bolt but a machine Phillips. It's flat and sticks out no more than rivets.
