    Question 225 vs. 250

How much speed loss is there on the 225 vs. the 250 on a Cougar hull? They're both ProXS.

Typically there is 1-1.5 mph loss/gain per 10 horse power.

If your talking used, then let price and condition be your guide. If your worried on a new unit it's worth the extra coin.

I will be buying used. I'm looking at about three different boats, the one with a 225 is a well equipped Cougar. Poles, updated graphs, and very low hours. I'm not a speed freak, but do want it to perform well.

That 225 Cougar should run into the low 70s, I had an 02 225 powered Jaguar and it kept up with everyone but the 250 BassCats and a Promax powered Gambler. I never felt underpowered at all.

I myself have a cougar with a 225. I am getting 75 with 1/2 tanks and myself in it, recently put a fury 4 26p on it w stock slidemaster 6", dual 8' blades, and I got much better overall performance, handling, hole shot, etc with the fury 4. If you ask me, it's almost like Mercury came out with the fury 4 for my boat :). With the fury 4, I only lost 2 mph...which I will give up any day of the week for better performance, bow lift, etc.

I guess I cannot really answer your question as I have not ran a 250 on my Cougar, but I will say that if the 225 is in good shape, speed will not be any bit of an issue, I can assure you that. Good luck!

Another plus vote on the Fury 4, just put one on my 250 Puma FTD and love it, I'm keeping it on!

Not the same hull, but I saw a large gain on my 2007 Puma Hull. 225 ProXS was a 73 mph boat loaded where the 250 ProXS is will run 78 mph loaded. The theory I have on my boat hull is that the extra HP is just enough to allow the hull to break free from the water and let the hull trap air like it should. Light, it will go over 80.

You might be satisfied with 225 on top end, but the one I fished out of struggled on holeshot. Depends on load, too

What model year is the boat and motors you are considering?

I bet with a fury 4 hole shot most likely will not be a problem. I'd say test and check it out. You might love the way it is

I have a puma adv with a 225. With a 25 fury i can run 73 loaded with 2 people livewells full. Holeshot is very good too, only one powerpole and the atlas plate helps with that. I m perfectly happy with it. If it ever blows up ill put a 250 just because i can but im good with the 225 til them.

My 2013 Cougar with a 225 Pro XS runs 73-74 mph fully loaded (dual console, w/o poles). By the way, it's for sale on the Boats for Sale Board and would love to have you look at it.
