    2001 Outlaw re-power option

I have a chance to pick up a 2004 Mercury 200xs with 20in mid section and sporty on it. Has 213 hours and compression check was 120 on all cylinders. What kind of holeshot and performance will I have vs 200 pro xs? Outlaw is rated for 200hp. I know 3 litre gives better hole shot but I recall these 200xs motors were pretty strong and fast if memory serves me right.....price is $5,000.

Sam, I remember a guy in mid-state Mo having a Intimidator 2000 with a Opti 200XS (2.5). Boat ran really strong, hole shot was decent IIRC. If my memory serves me right, these are pretty rev-happy motors.

The two engines would be very close to the same performance wise......I would not like the sporty for that rig though I am sure someone will say it will work...
I just dont see it running well with the sporty..

My 2000 Outlaw with a 12' 200 Pro XS optimax, 3.0, TM 1.75 gears runs 74+ loaded with one guy and 72+ tournament loaded, I think light in cold conditions it will run 76+. That is turning a 27 tempest plus, B&B with cup added by Croxton to 5600 rpms at 3" below pad. It ran very similarly with a 2.5 liter 200 EFI, just a tad faster on top end. Either way as stated above a sportsmaster would only hinder performance as these boats like the motors 2" or deeper from what I understand.

Sam, 2.5 litre will be lighter and help with lift. You won't need a TM. The 3 litre will be heavier and in that case I would recommend a TM. With a 200, you're likely not going to exceed 80mph unless you mod it out. Another option is to buy my boat.

Here's the deliema. The Evinrude 200HO Ficht is a 3.3 litre and strong. Been a good motor. Boat runs 76 now with me and fishing load. Because nobody likes Ficht motors it isn't worth much. So putting even $1,000 to $1,500 in it is a hard decision as the parts are very expensive. I will just pay the piper this time and fix. My thought was to fix and sell and replace with Mercury. Question is which Mercury. Thinking now I will find a 3.0 liter 200 EFI and send to Simon.

I disagree with your position on this. I know a couple of individuals running sportys on these rigs and they run just fine. Just out of curiosity where did you come up with the conclusion that these boats like the motor ran 2" or deeper? Is this just your experience? Same Gambler is a 1350lb hull. Think maybe that the upper weighs some where in that neighborhood? Because it does. Most guys are running a 2-00 hull with a 250. 2100 hull weighs in the neighborhood of 1700lbs. How many do you now running a 300xs with a sporty? I know a couple that are and their bulls run and handle just fine.
Sam is also. Losing 100lbs alone on the just the weight of the motor. I also think Sam is thinking outside the box which is a good thing. I personally think it will be just fine. Yes he will have a new learning curve. But didn't all of us have a learning curve when we bought our first boat?

GPGambler, yes we all have a learning for sure, whether it's on a gambler, bullet, stratos, etc. I am merely saying from my experience and by reading through these forums that Gamblers generally run 2" below pad or more because they like a lot of lift. I would think yes, the 200 XS would run fine with a sporty but, he may not be running that gearcase above pad and may be loosing performance on an outlaw. And yes a 2100 with a 300 XS probably I'd think would like a sporty, a 250 Pro XS or XS may not need a sporty. All in all every boat is a different scenario. Although if GamblerSam gets a 3.0 200 EFI and has it worked on, that will make for a sweet ride! Interested in seeing what that would do. Hopefully some of the more experienced Gambler owners will be along to give some better advice.

The 200xs is gone. New option: I have a Certified Mercury technician locally that is finishing a complete rebuild with new parts back to Mercury spec on a 2002 200hp Opti 3.0 and adding the mid section from a 2007 250 ProXS and torquemaster LU. Will give me a 1 year full warranty on motor. Thinking the 2002 Opti 200 shoukd go to 6,000 rpm. He will set all this up on my boat for 7,800. Not a bad deal for a fully rebuilt Opti with warranty. Pulled the trigger this morning.

Agreed with LSC here, double check the max rpm range on that 200 opti. There's no difference between a regular 200 opti 3.0 and a opti 200 Pro XS 3.0 to my knowledge(the added hp from the pro XS package would exceed the 10% rule). That being said my motor has a 5750 limiter.

DTS & LSC are absolutely right! Checked this and no difference on the 200. Stout motor that in stock form is already well over 200hp. RL is 5750 is what I can find as well. Bet it will still turn my 27 Bravo XS. Heading to Table Rock Saturday for tank of break-in. All new moving parts. If not, Re-prop. Will be a Bravo though. Love the handling. Like 4WD for a boat!

Yep! They are strong motors for sure. Mine likes the 27 tempests. Havent had a chance to try a 27 Bravo or a 27 Trophy yet though. Good Luck!!
