    1995 201 pro xl

I just bought a 95 201 pro with a 01 merc. 225, it has a Yamaha prop 27p. I am getting about 62-64MPH at 6k RPM. I don't think the tach is right because it doesn't sound like the motor is running 6k RPM and there is very little rooster tail. And the 6" jackplate is all the way down. (How I bought it) I just ordered a 27 tempest prop and going to try that. What should I be running speed wise, and is the prop going to make any difference?

Wide open rpm's for that model should be 5800 and it should push that boat close to 75. Set the prop to pad at 3" under to start.

I think you might be stretching it with a 27, probably won't be able to turn it. A Tempest 25 would be better.

Buying a new tach would be the first thing I'd do. Blindly(not knowing true rpms) buying a prop(s) in hopes that performance gets better...may prove to be a frustrating and expensive proposition.

To choose the correct prop for you: you'll need a working tach...and have the boat loaded with whatever gear/gas etc that you'll normally have on the boat. Propping for top speed only...may leave you with a boat that has difficulty getting out of the hole (esp fully loaded with gear and people).

    Just my 2 cents...

Put new gauges in the boat today, only turning 5400 to 5500 rpm's at 66.7 mph. Thinking about checking the plate up a little higher and trying the 27 pitch prop and see what happens. I think I only have a 4.5 inch jack plate not really sure don't know how to properly measure it.

Find a level spot . Then level boat with trailer jack with a level on the front deck of boat . Level motor with a small level on the fins of the lower unit . Then go from there 3.50 below pad .
On top of page has how to go from there. If it all the way down bring it up .

What prop where you running and how much water pressure at WOT? If you move the plate only move it 1/4" at a time and test it. Don't make any big moves that could make things harder to figure out.

Was running a 27 tempest tonight and only got to 5300-5400 at WOT and went 69MPH prop seemed to blow out a little on blastoff. Plenty of water pressure. Don't honestly remember but I remember looking down and it had over 10

Have you put new plugs in that motor since you bought it? Make sure it has Champion QL77CC plugs in it and nothing else and check to make sure all of thses things have been done to your fuel system. http://www.bbcboards.net/showthread.php?t=22490 The fuel line and pulse fuel pump rebuild make a big difference on top end rpm's.

Just ran a 25 tempest tonight and turned 5600 rpm at 68.4 with 600lb of people and live wells full. Thinking about picking the motor up another 1/2" and running it with a normal load and seeing what happens

That Mercury should turn a 25" tempest up to the limiter at your regular load.
