    Coast guard rating

    2017-04-25 17.10.39.jpg

Someone make sense of this weight rating. It's almost comical

20 ft nitro .Tag says 1000lbs or 1400 lbs persons motor and gear.
Comes from the factory with a 225 and a trolling motor and 3 batteries.

    So I did some math

    225 optimax .500lbs
    40 gallons fuel -280 lbs
    Livewells full - 200lbs
    3x62 lb group 31s - 185
    Trolling motor - 75 lbs

    1240 lbs

I can't bring any tackle or even a lunch :( and have to lose 80lbs . Anyone else have a rating that's makes no sense?

Back then motors were lighter and in the end the coast guard doesnt actually rate or care about that boat being over 20'

The Coast Guard rating system is truly a contorted exercise in bizarre mathematics. Talk to any boat builder and you will understand what I am talking about. There simply is no obvious rhym or reason to it (like a lot of other government regulations).

Here in Florida it is illegal to run an overpowered boat. Example - if the plate says 150, a 175 is illegal. However you can "hotrod" a 150 up to say 200 and you are perfectly legal.

Our government helping in every way they can.

But hey, it creates jobs, right ?

What's always got me is why you can have an 18' jet boat with a big block chev and no one cares. Put a 175 on a boat rated for a 150 and you gonna die

Maybe cause a 454 at 400hp equals 60mph on most of those with the exception of a few of course

That is correct it takes a fairly nasty one to hang with the bullet and even fewer out there can hang with the 2.4 ;)

but there are some out there that are sick and no one ever says anything about them being overrated. They don't even have rating stickers

Yea those tags are stupid on my boats example. I own a 2002 stratos 21xl magnum sticker says its rated for a 225. Its a 21 foot boat... And to add insult to injury I have a friend that owns a 2001 stratos 21ss extreme DC "same exact boat cant see any difference in the hull weight or anything" and its rated for a 250.... Kinda strange and bums me out because I would really love to put a 250 on it.

Similar story with my dad's Triton. His is a 20+ footer from I believe 2003 (TR-20, maybe?) that's rated for a 225. Then the next model year comes out, exactly the same hull, and it's rated for a 250. He repowered a couple years back and looked into getting the plate changed and found out that it'd be a whole lot more trouble than it was worth to do it legally, if it was even possible to do at all. Dumb. Especially given the fact that it's over 20 feet, yet those plates are the gospel when it comes to DNR / insurance enforcement.

Boats are built more for motor weight than hp. When 4 strokes first came out you could get a higher hp 2 stroke or the smaller hp 4 stroke. Builders eventually adjusted for the heavier 4 strokes.

My boat doesnt even have a plate. Take yours off. Dnr cant do anything about a boat the coast guard doesnt rate. Your mfr put that on there. They coulda put unlimited v8 or 90hp. Legally your boat isnt rated.

I actually suggested the same, but the insurance company already knew what it was rated for on the plate and that's what they wanted it to be. I'm not sure if switching insurance companies could've solved that or not.

No rating on anything over 20ft... my insurance only asks if it meets coast guard regulations.

Anything over 20' 1" is entirely up to the manufacturer. A lot of these were made before the public 250 engines were out as 225 was once the preferred engine, just like 200 and 150 before those. They have a standard for horsepower using the rear 1/4 beam of the hull overall and the overall length. It's a pretty simple calculation. Capacities are not a simple calculation and require some math, though again the regulations change below 20' to USCG standards. N adding to that the USCG does not use actual engine weights, they have a table. That table is set to change in the near future due to four stroke weights.

My 2000'Ranger 520VX is rated 225 max. Had my 225 opti rebuilt 3 times and said the hell with it im putting a 250 pro xs on. Now my 2000 225 opt wieghed 515 and my 2015 250 pro xs is at 505lbs and that motor woke my boat up. It's beyound me why manufacturers will put a rating of less than 250 max hp. My boat is more than capable of handling a 250
